Rolls are the best by far, but you pay for it. I know some people get away with using them for the starting bank too, but I would think that is only possible in the warmer climates. They are more of a deep cycle battery which is actually good for the house bank, especially if you have an inverter. Golf cart batteries are not starting batteries. I would not hesitate to get the excides golf carts. They do not have to last long for them to be a success - but my guess is that they will serve me well for years. The batteries are about a year and a half old, water usage is very low despite the fact that I still use the old ferro-resonant charger, and I have not a single complaint.Īnd the cost was very reasonable (about $100 each or less if I recall). I have no trouble starting with the golf cart batteries (even on the stbd side which only has 4 of them to crank the engine). I live in Vancouver where the weather can approach freezing in the winter. Replacing the 12 lighter batteries will be a dream compared to handling the old monsters. I *never* want to remove such large batteries again. I took out 8 old 8v batteries which whighed about 140 pounds each and put the smaller golf cart batteries (about 60 pounds each) in instead. 8 of them on the "house" side (also starts port engine), and 4 of them on the "reserve" side (also starts stbd engine). I replaced my 32V banks with the Exide 8V golf cart batteries.
